Greetings ICC Family! A couple of months ago we noticed something in our neighbor’s back yard that we thought was a little strange. The only way to describe it was that it looked like a little robot with a spinning propellor that was attached to the back fence. None of us knew what it was, though, so we forgot about it. A few weeks later we noticed that it had been moved and was now mounted on a pole high enough that it could easily see into our yard and into our back door. After years of living in China - knowing that there were cameras watching us everywhere there… let’s just say that a little Star Wars looking droid that can see into our house was a little unnerving! After living with our back curtains closed 24/7, S did some research and learned that our surveillance device was actually just a backyard weather station.
I don’t know why that particular thing bothered us so much. We carry a device around with us everywhere that we go that tracks pretty much everything we are doing. Maybe some of you are convinced that your phone even listens to your conversations because the advertisements always seem to know exactly what we need! Yet we know that there is definitely someone watching us all the time. In Psalm 139:1-3 David writes: 1 O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. The question I am asking myself and I would ask you today is whether or not these verses make you nervous - like the weather station and our phones. If so, that says a lot about our walk with Christ and our struggle with sin. Because for David, these verses reflected a sense of joy and thankfulness that his heavenly Father knew him so well and was always with him. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand,” David says in verse 6. To think that we have a Savior, and a Comforter, and an Advocate, and a Healer, and a Guide that is always with us, should bring us great joy! We want that ever-present help in times of need that we read about in Psalm 46:1. While we definitely do things that we are ashamed of and regret and would not want anyone seeing, in those cases we can just pray along with David in verses 23 and 24: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. So, I hope you can be encouraged, friends, that you have someone that knows everything about you. And I hope you have a great week walking with Him! Pastor Aaron
