Yesterday, was a little disappointing…
I had made several trips over to a local residential care facility to see how I and our church could start serving the residents. We had corresponded via email several times as well, and they seemed genuinely interested in having me come weekly to lead a Bible study and spiritual discussion. Yesterday I went over with one of our ICC regulars for our first session, expecting it to be fairly simple and fun, mainly introducing ourselves and meeting the residents. I took my guitar to lead a few hymns as well, thinking that if they weren’t very talkative, we could at least sing together.
We arrived to find not a single person at the facility knew we were coming. The lady that just a few weeks previous was so excited to get us on the activities schedule… no longer works there. None of the residents knew we were coming, so they all were back in their rooms or had other things to do. And they didn’t know we were coming because none of the staff knew we were coming. The former activities director had not left any notes about us. The skeleton staff there didn’t know what to do with us, so after talking briefly to a couple of residents who were in the lobby… we left.
And I left a little disappointed, and a little frustrated. And asking God what He was doing… Because I wasn’t sure. We wanted to bless and minister to those residents, and I assume they would have been interested in being blessed and ministered to.
Today, I am still not sure what the Lord is going to do through all of this. But He has reminded me of this: that His purposes will be accomplished, and He will do this in his way and His time.
“The God who made the world and everything in it… is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.” Acts 17:24-25
I do trust that He will use each of us as He sees fit, and when He does… it is a privilege to be involved in his work. That is one of the lessons we learned last Sunday from the parable of the workers in the vineyard.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6
“At the right time, I, the LORD, will make it happen.” Isaiah 60:22
For whatever reason, we weren’t able to serve yesterday. And who knows when they will be organized enough to invite us back. But I don’t plan on giving up. I hope that each of you will persevere this week. And even when things don’t work out as planned - keep trying to bless others! This is our calling as believers, so let’s not grow weary in doing good!
Praying for you all!
Pastor Aaron
